The Contracor abrasive media recovery system VAC-7HS with storage silo and CS-500 pre-separator is a powerful electrically operated vacuum recovery system for collecting, cleaning and temporarily storing used abrasive media. The system was specially developed for mineral abrasive media that can generate increased dust levels and a high proportion of unusable fine particles during the blasting process.

The VAC-7HS combines a particularly powerful side-channel blower with a freestanding CS-500 pre-separator, an integrated cartridge filter and a separately installed storage silo with a volume of 0.3 m³. This separates the collected abrasive media from unusable material, filters it and then stores it in the storage silo independently of the blast pot.

The recovered material can be discharged from the silo in a controlled manner via the manually operated shut-off flap. Suitable abrasive media can be refilled into a blast pot. Alternatively, material that can no longer be used can be transferred to a Big-Bag filling station for orderly disposal.

Specially designed for mineral abrasives

Mineral abrasives can generate high levels of dust, abrasion, and broken grains during the blasting process. These fine particles should be separated as reliably as possible from the still-usable abrasive before the material is reused or stored.

The VAC-7HS was specially developed for these applications. The upstream CS-500 performs an initial separation of reusable abrasive from unusable components before the material flow reaches the recovery unit and the storage silo.

This makes the system particularly suitable for blasting halls where mineral media are used and increased dust contamination within the material circuit is to be expected.

Multi-stage recovery process

The used abrasive is first swept or shoveled into the floor hopper. From there, the powerful side-channel blower draws the material through the abrasion-resistant rubber suction hose.

The material flow first reaches the freestanding CS-500 pre-separator. There, reusable abrasive is separated from dust, fines, and unusable material.

The recovered abrasive is then transported to the main unit and into the freestanding 0.3 m³ storage silo. Fine dust particles remaining in the airflow are separated in the integrated cartridge filter.

The material remains in the storage silo until it is fed via the manually operated shut-off valve to a blast pot, another material container, or a Big-Bag station.


Freestanding CS-500 pre-separator

The CS-500 is located in the material flow upstream of the actual recovery and filtration unit. It performs initial separation of dust, broken abrasive grains and other lighter components.

This reduces the dust load on downstream components. At the same time, a smaller proportion of unusable fine particles enters the storage silo.

The material separated in the CS-500 is collected in a separate area and emptied manually. The required emptying intervals depend on the type of abrasive media, the amount of dust generated and the daily operating time.

Freestanding storage silo with a volume of 0.3 m³

The VAC-7HS features a separately installed abrasive-media storage silo with a volume of 0.3 m³. This means that the recovered material is not automatically fed to a single blast pot but is first collected centrally.

The operator can temporarily store and inspect the material in the silo and then decide whether it should be reused or disposed of. The freestanding design allows flexible integration into existing blast rooms and is not directly tied to a specific blast pot.

The actual quantity of material that can be stored in the silo depends on the bulk density of the abrasive media used.

The storage silo allows the recovered material to be processed separately from the blasting process in terms of both time and location.

Reuse or big-bag filling

The VAC-7HS can be used universally for reusing suitable abrasive media or for orderly disposal of media that can no longer be used.

For reuse, a suitable blast pot or material container is positioned below the discharge point. After opening the manual shut-off valve, the abrasive media flows out of the storage silo by gravity.

If the material is to be disposed of, a suitable big-bag filling station can be installed below the discharge point. This allows the recovered abrasive media to be collected in a controlled manner and prepared for removal.

Manual material discharge via shut-off valve

The material stored in the 0.3 m³ silo is discharged via a manually operated shut-off valve. This allows the operator to determine when and how much material is discharged.

The manual design enables simple and controlled operation. At the same time, the closed flap prevents the silo from being emptied unintentionally.

Before opening, ensure that the designated blast pot, material container, or Big Bag is correctly positioned and secured against slipping.

📌 Important note:

The VAC-7HS does not automatically refill a blast pot. Material is discharged manually via the shut-off flap of the storage silo.

High-performance side-channel blower

The VAC-7HS is equipped with an electric side-channel blower with a rated drive power of 7.5 kW. It generates the negative pressure required for pneumatic material conveying.

The used abrasive is transported through the suction line to the CS-500 and then to the recovery unit or storage silo.

The actual conveying capacity depends on the type of abrasive, grain shape, bulk density, moisture, degree of contamination, hose length, and hose routing.


Integrated cartridge filter with pulse-jet cleaning

The VAC-7HS features an integrated high-performance cartridge filter with a filter area of 7.5 m². The polyester filter medium retains fine dust particles from the conveyed airstream.

Automatic pulse-jet cleaning cleans the filter cartridge with short compressed-air pulses. This loosens adhering dust from the filter surface, helping to keep airflow and suction performance as constant as possible.

The upstream CS-500 reduces the amount of dust reaching the cartridge filter. This relieves the filter element and can improve its service life compared with a system without pre-separation.

Despite automatic cleaning, the cartridge filter must be inspected regularly and replaced as needed, depending on dust exposure and operating time.

The maximum intended suction hose length is 10 meters. The complete set is supplied with a 5-meter abrasion-resistant rubber suction hose with an inner diameter of 63.5 mm.

The specified performance may vary with other abrasives due to differences in specific gravity, grain shape, moisture, and flow characteristics. Hose bends, reductions in cross-section, and differences in elevation also affect conveying capacity.

The suction line should be installed as short and straight as possible, without unnecessary bends. Increased flow resistance can reduce recovery performance.

Economical blasting media processing

Even with mineral blasting media, a technically usable material fraction may remain after the blasting process. Without recovery, this fraction is often disposed of together with dust and unusable material.

The VAC-7HS separates the reusable material fraction in the CS-500 and collects it in the freestanding storage silo. The operator can then decide whether to reuse the material or send it for disposal.

Floor hopper with grating

The floor hopper included in the complete set serves as the central collection point for used blasting media. Material lying on the workshop floor is swept or shoveled into the hopper and then extracted by the vacuum unit.

The integrated grating retains larger foreign objects before they can enter the suction line. This protects the suction hose, dust pre-separator, filter unit, and storage silo from coarse contaminants.

The floor hopper enables the retrofitting of a stationary recovery system without requiring the installation of a complete automatic floor conveying system.


Suitable blasting media

The VAC-7HS was specially developed for reusable mineral blasting media. Whether a particular material is suitable for multiple blasting cycles depends on grain stability, contamination, and its condition after the blasting process.

As a technical size reference, the manufacturer specifies a maximum grain size of G40 or approximately 0.30 to 0.80 mm. Actual suitability also depends on grain shape, bulk density, moisture, and flow behavior.

The material used should be dry and sufficiently free-flowing. Damp, clumped, or heavily contaminated blasting media can reduce suction performance and block material paths.

⚠️ Check blasting media suitability:

Not every mineral blasting medium is suitable for repeated reuse. Highly friable disposable blasting media can only be recovered economically to a limited extent, even with pre-separation.

Optional handheld suction tube

For flexible collection of blasting media from larger floor areas, an optional handheld suction tube with support wheels and a handle is available. The accessory is supplied with a 10-meter PU suction hose.

The hand suction tube enables targeted collection of loose material in areas that cannot be reached directly via the stationary bottom hopper.

The support wheels make it easier to guide the suction tube and reduce physical effort. The hand suction tube is not included as standard with the VAC-7HS complete set.

Operating requirements

Operation of the VAC-7HS requires a suitable three-phase power connection with 3~ 380–420 V / 50 Hz. A suitable compressed-air supply is also required for the automatic pulse-jet cleaning of the filter cartridge.

The system must be installed on a level surface with sufficient load-bearing capacity. The system weight of approximately 565 kg, as well as the additional weight of the abrasive stored in the silo, must be taken into account during planning.

Suitable routing for lines must be provided between the bottom hopper, CS-500, recovery unit and storage silo. The components must remain easily accessible for operation, maintenance and cleaning.

There must be sufficient space below the silo outlet for a blast pot, material container or suitable Big Bag holder.


Maintenance and care

Regular maintenance is essential for consistently high suction, separation and recovery performance. The CS-500, filter cartridge, pulse-jet cleaning system, suction hoses and storage silo in particular must be checked regularly.

The dust pre-separator must be emptied manually depending on the amount of material accumulated. Emptying it too late can impair separation performance and place greater strain on downstream components.

The storage silo and shut-off valve must also be checked for deposits, wear and proper operation. The valve must close reliably and be safe to operate.
